How to Setup a Website

Purchasing a Domain

Cost: $6.99 - $12.99/year

The first step to setting up a web site is purchasing a domain. It can be difficult to find a name that pertains to your business or what you are interested in promoting because to date there have been millions of domain registrations. If you are creating a site that will be industry specific, you should buy a domain that is relevant, yet still easy to remember. For example, if you were going to create a health related site, you would use pick a name like yourHealthSite.com or your-health-site.com. 1and1.com has tools that make this process easier, and they are one of the cheapest. GoDaddy.com is also very fairly priced and offers great service.

When you're choosing a domain name, it is important that you choose a name that has meaning for your business. If you are advertising make money related products you could have a domain called "my-make-money-reviews.com", or "make-moneyReview.com". Using dashes in your domain name will make a domain name easier for you to find.

Another technique is to pick a very general domain name, something like "product-comparison.com". With this domain, you can have many different pages or sub-domains. You could review make money products from the URL, makemoney.product-comparisons.com, or www.product-comparisons.com/makemoney.html. Obviously you can review many products using one single domain and it will save you from buying a domain for every product that you want to promote.

Paid Hosting

Cost: $2.95/month +

Depending on your needs, there is a wide range of hosting companies and packages that will satisfy them. There are several different types of hosting, but if you are just creating a website for informational purposes (or a small e-commerce site), then a basic Unix or windows hosting package will be suitable for you. Both of these servers support HTML, but if you are developing your site in .asp, you should use a windows server, and if you are developing a PHP site, you should use a Unix server.

One misconception is that having a good web host is expensive. Hosting is very inexpensive, but is a necessity to having a quality website. A lot of the web hosts allow you to host multiple domains on their server (for an additional cost), which will add salability to your internet business.

There are free hosting services available, but these are not recommended for hosting as they are not as reliable, lack features, and don’t have the bandwidth or space of those that are purchased.

Recommended Hosts:

We highly recommend the following 3 web hosting companies as we have used all of them. If you are looking for good Hosting/Domain packages we suggest looking into the following companies:

  1. EasyCgi -
  2. HostMonster
  3. 1and1
  4. BlueHost
  5. Strato

DNS Settings

Your hosting company will provide you with a primary and secondary Domain Name Server (DNS).

A DNS translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember and make more sense than a set of numbers. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.your-site.com might translate to 187.210.24.84.

The DNS system is a network of servers. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned.

In order for your domain to point to your web host, you will have to copy the DNS information from your web host, and change it add it to the DNS settings of your Domain that you purchased. For example if you purchased a domain from goDaddy.com, you would have to go into your DNS settings and update the DNS info.

It usually takes about 2 days to resolve your URL (DNS network to be able to translate your domain), and your site to display on the Internet under your domain name.

For example, if you are using WA Hosting, these are the DNS settings that you will to use:

Primary: NS1.MYWAHOSTING.COM
Secondary: NS2.MYWAHOSTING.COM

You updated these DNS settings wherever you have purchased your domain from (1&1 or GoDaddy). This will link your domain up with WA Hosting

Uploading Your Website to The Server

Now that you have your hosting and domain set-up, you are going to need a program that will upload your website’s files to your server. Your File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program will require you to enter some server specific information so that you can connect to the server. You will need the following information to connect via FTP to your web server:

FTP Host – provided by your web hosting provider.

Login – provided by your web hosting provider

Password – provided by your web hosting provider.

***********************************
Note: If you are using WA Hosting, you will first need to set-up your domain in Plesk in order to obtain your FTP information and to set-up your domain profile. Instructions on how to do this are found on the following page:

Setting up a Domain in Plesk

You will not be able to FTP to your WA Hosting account unless you have done this.

***********************************

After entering your FTP information into the appropriate fields, you will want to connect to the server. The remote server will contain several folders where each of your domains live. Navigate to the domain root folder where you want to upload your site to. If you are using WA Hosting, this will be the httpdocs folder.

Many web hosting companies offer the ability to upload your site using their own upload tool. In this case you won't have to install an FTP program. This includes Site Rubix (free to members at WA) and other programs like Dreamweaver or Frontpage, as they have FTP programs built in and are very easy to use.

If you need an FTP program then you can download CoreFTP. It is very easy to use and setup.
