Using WA Keyword Lists

Introduction to WA Keyword Lists

Using the "right" keywords in your advertising campaigns is a very integral part of making money online. Good keywords will deliver traffic to your website and if they are used properly (and you use the right ones), you will make sales.. Using the "wrong" keywords can bring you a lot of traffic, but will waste your advertising dollars. The false pretense is that the more traffic you get, the more money you will make. This is simply not the case and we are going to discuss why within this tutorial.

At Wealthy Affiliate we provide you with keyword lists and recommend affiliate products to help you branch into new markets and promote products that you may have not thought about promoting in the past. The keywords in the lists vary from being highly relevant keywords, to more general keywords that can achieve high volumes of traffic. If you want to take full advantage of the keywords that we provide, you need to know how to use them properly in your advertising campaigns.

This tutorial is going to provide you with two techniques that you can use to effectively use the keyword lists at WealthyAffiliate.com. Both techniques will give you an ideas that will enable you to take advantage of the keyword lists.

Rules to Remember

Rule 1
The first thing you should note is that our keyword lists were NOT created for your specific website. The keywords in the list pertain to a particular industry, and can be applied to many different types of websites. A large number of the keywords may to not be relevant to your landing pages or your direct linking campaigns.

So rule of thumb: Do not copy and paste 2000 keywords into a campaign and think that they are going to make you a load of money! The reason for this is that your ads will not be relevant to any one keywords and there is no way that your landing page will be relevant to all of the keywords either! Your Quality Score will also be low due to poorly constructed ad groups.

Rule 2
They keyword lists can have many different uses. They can be applied to PPC, SEO, and Email Marketing or Article Marketing campaigns. In additional, they can be use to give you ideas to do your own keyword research. Do not feel like these are the only keywords within a particular industry. Do your own research and “dig” a little deeper into keywords that are relevant to your site and the products you are promoting. Quite often you will find little niches by taking the keywords from our list and expanding upon them using your own keyword research.

Many of the keywords within the lists are based on keywords that we have made sales with, or use in our campaigns to make sales. Many companies do not offer conversion tracking to their affiliates, so in many cases there is no way for us to know exactly which keywords sell. We do however base some of our keyword research on keywords that we have running in successful campaigns, or keywords that have made us sales in the past.

Rule 3

The first mistake that new marketers can make is trying to get a ton of traffic to their sites. Traffic is no good if it is not targeted. And again, TRAFFIC IS NO GOOD IF IT IS NOT TARGETED! Sure you can get hundreds of clicks every day by advertising under a search term like "dog", but it is very difficult to make this term relevant to any one ad or landing page. People searching the term dog could be looking for dog pictures, dog food, dog information, dog daycare, dog pound, dog the bounty hunter, dog training…I think you get the point. Unless you can provide the visitor a channel for each of these topics, chances are you will be wasting money on traffic that will not yield good results.

Say you have a "dog training" product that you are trying to promote. Would someone type in “dog” into Google if they were looking for dog training? Probably not. Something more relevant would be “dog training guide”, “how to train my dog to sit ”, or “train my German Shepherd”. Now these are targeted keywords. If someone searches for any of these, they are looking for something specific that will help them out. If you can deliver a product that is relevant to their search, along with supporting information, the keyword will trigger a SALE! This is called Internet marketing!

Now that we have covered the basics, lets get into some techniques that you can apply to the keyword lists. These are just suggestions, and you may very well come up with your own techniques

High Traffic Technique

This method is probably the most common and it is based on the amount of traffic that the keywords will generate. If your campaigns are not receiving any traffic at all, how can you expect them to earn money? You can’t. There are 5 steps to properly use the high traffic technique and they are listed below:

  1. Take all of the keywords from the list of your choice and copy and paste them into Google Adwords traffic estimator. If the keyword list is larger than 2000 keywords, you may have to divide it up into two or more blocks of keywords

  2. Sort the keywords by the traffic that they receive. Once you have done this, you want to create a list of the highest traffic keywords. You will find that the keywords with the highest traffic are very general keywords such as “money”, “dogs”, or “flowers”. You want to add keywords to your list that receive less traffic than just these keywords. One suggestion would be to select the top 50 keywords.

  3. Decide which keywords are relevant to the product(s) that you are promoting. The keyword lists are meant to give you a guideline for a particular industry and all of them will not be highly relevant to every campaign. Pick the keywords that are only relevant to what you are promoting, nothing else.

  4. Now for the fun part – creating the ad group. What you will want to do is take your keywords and expand upon them to form an ad group that is anywhere from 1-20 keywords is size. For example, if one of the highest traffic keywords was “make money”, this is what an example ad group would look like.

    make money
    make money online
    make money on the net
    make money easy
    ways to make money
    make money techniques
    ”make money”
    ”make money online”
    ”make money on the net”
    ”make money easy”
    ”ways to make money”
    ”make money techniques”
    [make money]
    [make money online]
    [make money on the net]
    [make money easy]
    [ways to make money]
    [make money techniques]

As you can see from the ad group there is 6 base keywords and we have added broad, phrase, and match types. This will increase your ad group CTR.

** Do not feel that you have to add 20 KW’s to an ad group for it to be optimal. High quality ad groups will typically be anywhere from 5-10 unique KW’s.

  5. Write an ad that is relevant to the ad group. This means that your ad will contain the keywords in the ad title as well as the description. Using the previous ad group, this is a good example of an ad:

    Make Money Online
    Learn Ways to Make Money
    on the Net Here.
    YourSite.com

The reason you want to include keywords in the ad title as well as the description, is that Google will recognize that your ad is very relevant to the keywords and automatically give you a higher ad positioning. We have tested this out and by simply changing a few words in an ad you can lose ad positioning. A recent study that we conducted on adcopy has also illustrated this. Our ads with less relevant adcopy were displayed 5-6 positions lower than a highly relevant ad and at the same cost!

High Relevancy Technique

This method differs from the traffic because instead of aiming for traffic volume, you are aiming to create highly targeted ad groups, regardless of the amount of traffic. This technique will produce the highest conversion ratio, but may not generate more gross profits because of the lack of traffic. Often times when you create a highly relevant campaign, traffic will trickle in. In order to make sales on a daily basis, you need to create several ad groups to compensate for this. This is not a bad thing, especially if you are on a smaller budget. You will get higher conversions and your campaigns will yield a much better Quality Score!

There are 3 steps involved with the High Relevance Technique and they are listed below:

  1. First, you want to pick a keyword from the keyword list that is not only relevant to the product(s) you are promoting, it is relevant to the landing page where you are sending your traffic (this could be the merchant through direct linking).

  2. In this example, we will select the common search term “beating adwords” and create an ad group for it. Create a list of all the highly related possibilities for that search term making a group of 3+ word search terms. Here is an example list below:

    beating adwords review
    beating adwords book
    beating adwords ebook
    compare beating adwords
    beating adwords scam
    adwords beating
    buy beating adwords
    purchase beating adwords
    ”beating adwords review”
    ”beating adwords book”
    ”beating adwords ebook”
    ”compare beating adwords”
    ”beating adwords scam”
    ”adwords beating”
    ”buy beating adwords”
    ”purchase beating adwords”
    [beating adwords review]
    [beating adwords book]
    [beating adwords ebook]
    [compare beating adwords]
    [beating adwords scam]
    [adwords beating]
    [buy beating adwords]
    [purchase beating adwords]

As you can see from the ad group there is 8 base keywords and we have added broad, phrase, and match types. This will increase your ad group CTR.

** Do not feel that you have to add 20 KW’s to an ad group for it to be optimal. High quality ad groups will typically be anywhere from 5-10 unique KW’s.

  3. Write an ad that is relevant to the ad group This means that your ad will contain the “beating adwords” keywords in the ad title as well as the description. Using the previous ad group, this is a good example of an ad:

    Beating Adwords Review
    Compare Beating Adwords
    e-book. Beat Adwords Now.
    YourSite.com

The reason you want to include keywords in the ad title as well as the description, is that Google will recognize that your ad is very relevant to the keywords and automatically give you a higher ad positioning. As you can see from the ad above, we have included a large majority of the keywords within the ad group, while still keeping the ad grammatically correct. This ad would receive a very high Quality Score based on the keywords within the ad group

These keywords that we have chosen may not get much traffic, but they are VERY HIGHLY relevant to the product that we are promoting (http://www.beatingadwords.com). When looking for keywords from the lists, you need to filter out keywords that are not highly relevant to your what you are promoting. If required, you may want to build many different landing pages so that you can target a larger range of keywords. In the last section we used the high traffic keyword "Make Money" as our common keyword. Using the High Relevance Technique you would not include this term in your ad group. You may use keywords like:

make money working from home
make money working on the internet
make money on the internet
make money from home
make money on the computer
make money internet marketing
(broad, phrase, and exact)

Conclusion

Understanding the use of keywords is one of the most important aspects of any Internet marketing campaign. Without the proper use of keywords, no campaign will be highly successful. Use your keywords wisely, set aside some time to perform your own keyword research, and focus on keeping your web pages relevant to the search terms that you do decide to use.

Using a combination of the high traffic and high relevancy keywords is recommended. Implementing both techniques in your ad groups will get you both traffic and sales. Successful campaigns have a combination of both highly relevant keywords that convert a very high rates, and high traffic (and still relevant) keywords that achieve higher traffic, more sales, but lower conversions. The key is to have a healthy balance of both types of keywords.

Here are a few things to remember:

Relevant Keywords Sell

Broad Keywords get high traffic but rarely make sales

High Traffic Keywords that are relevant Make Money

The keyword lists at Wealthy Affiliate will give you a very good base group of keywords, with both highly relevant keywords and high traffic keywords. If implemented properly, these keywords will make you money and will give you ideas about other keywords that you can generate from combining keywords in the lists.
